Research discovery: the visual intelligence for transportation VITA lab

On June 26th, 2019, alumni had the opportunity to discover the research of the Visual lntelligence for Transportation VITA Lab, directed by Prof. Alexandre Alahi, EPFL alumnus SC’06 & PhD EL’11.

VITA is interested in democratizing robots that will co-exist with humans in a safe, efficient, trustworthy, and socially-aware way. Self-driving cars, delivery robots, or social robots are examples of such robots. To realize this future, the laboratory proposes empowering robots with a type of cognition we call socially-aware AI, i.e., robots that cannot only perceive human behaviour but reason with social intelligence.
VITA is working for instance on the analysis of pedestrian behaviour in the Lausanne station in order to adapt the infrastructures of the future.
